The republicans have FINALLY found a tax hike they can get behind. Why? It increases taxes on he poor while sparing the super rich - who are carry so much water for the rest of us - from an more undo responsibility.
But in order to justify the tax hikes - there must be a villian - a group of people who can be demonized for not properly pulling their weight. What better target than Main Street America - particularly the working poor?
“The poor don’t pay any taxes!”
Really? The seeds of this mind-boggling notion were first planted by a Wall Street Journal editorial in 2002. The editorial described those that were living below the poverty level as “lucky duckies” because they didn’t pay any federal INCOME tax. They didn’t pay for the tax because they didn’t qualify for it. Put simply - they were too poor to qualify for income tax. How lucky can you get? And how dare such a large segment of our population escape the responsibility of paying their fair share.
If all this seems more than a tad surreal - wait - its early yet….things can get worse. Now the republicans who have fought against even the most rational of tax increases - like closing a loophole that encourages the ultra-rich to buy private jets - are now solidly behind forcing the “lucky duckies” to pay their fair share.
God forbid that the poor benefit from a progressive tax code!
That’s simply unAmerican - everyone needs to pay their “fair share.” The rich are just shouldering the burden for too many wanton indigents! The payroll tax cut needs to go! And for God’s sake - we really need to lose the earned income tax credit. My God -it actually pulled 7.2 million people out of poverty in 2009 including 4 million children - so it really must be useless - particularly because it did nothing for anyone making more than $40k a year. What about those poor industrious millionaires pulling in $1 million + in income a year? It does nothing for them.
The implication here is clear. The working poor are a bunch of lazy malcontents that living off the industry and toil of the mega-rich. Never mind that is the actions of the mega-rich that impoverished them in the first place.
So now we’ve devolved to the point where the bullies are demonizing their own victims.
