The latest round of republican rhetoric regarding contraception has left my head spinning. Sure, I expect the social conservatives and elements in the tea party to brush off the abortion issue every four years but the out and out open attack on contraception and Planned Parenthood was beyond my wildest imaginings. Its a horrifying thing and proof positive that freedom can not be taken for granted for so much as a minute These are issues that I thought were settled either before I was born or shortly thereafter - nearly 50 years ago!

No this is not a parody on freedom fries and all things anti-French American.
Once my brain stopped rattling today - I came to a epiphany that had long been hibernating in the darkest corners of my mind. It was one of those “ah -hah!” moments that is generally cause for self-congratulation. But not in this case. My epiphany can summed up in a simple sentence: Our government is no longer a functioning entity.
Our Government has been hijacked a religious and ideological faction:
Our government no longer functions because it has been hijacked by by religious and ideological extremists locked in an unholy alliance with a Machiavellian oligarchy. The power rests with the monied elite in the oligarchy while the tea party extremists are merely tools for business interests. The tea party enables and the oligarchy continues to disable what little is left of our republic.

I have already accepted that the US has become a robber baron economy - but it had always been in the back of my head that expatriation was an option if things continued their downward spiral here. But a recent round of reading and research has convinced me that the Robber Barons have “gone global.”
Take reinstating Glass-Steagall as an example….

Apparently the GOP is back to their “austerity” measures and the people of Joplin MO could suffer for it. Eric Cantor lead the charge. Compassionate soul that he is, Cantor feels that the people of Joplin deserve aide - but only if it means cutting back on OTHER government programs…. you know ….little things like unemployment insurance, medicare and social security. Nothing of any major importance for a country in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Simple Solutions or Simplistic Nonsense?
Yes, Eric Cantor was in the news again touting his “kitchen table” economics and trying to apply it the devastation in Joplin MO. It really is very simple isn’t it? I mean - if you save $10k for a new car but your house is blown down by a Tornado - you use the $10k to rebuild your life, right? Sorry that does not fly.

The Book of Cletis wrote a very compelling post on the disconnect between the Christian right and their support of such supply -side economic policies that reek of the “let them eat cake” mentality. How on earth does the worship of Ayn Rand square with Christianity, the Golden Rule and teachings of Christ as portrayed in the four Gospels? The Gospels are replete with numerous parables and teachings that leave no room for doubt as to how Jesus would have responded to the likes of Rand. After all it was Christ who said - “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

I want to thank The Book of Cletis for allowing me to republish this blog. I have my own take on the Ayn Rand/ Fundamentalist Christian conundrum - and will put that forth in a follow-up post of my own. The irony of Fundamentalist Christians fawning over Atlas Shrugged is not lost on me - but it is a topic I have not brought up before on this blog. Meanwhile, enjoy this post it is very well written and be sure to stop by The Book of Cletis - it is a blog that is on my daily reading list.
H.L. Mencken cautioned us years ago about our fellow citizens when he wrote, “Never underestimate the ignorance of the American people.” Old H.L. was a pretty cynical fellow but he nailed that right on the head. Still, I was recently shocked when I learned The People of the Tea have embraced Ayn Rand as their new messiah. How anyone can profess their love for Jesus and at the same time walk around town with a copy of Atlas Shrugged is beyond me. Jesus said love the poor for they are your brothers and sisters and love your neighbor as yourself. Ayn Rand said if the poor get in your way take a board to their lazy asses. If your neighbor is poor and threatening your property values, burn his fucking house down.
